Keeping yourself occupied during quarantine

If you’ve ever been in quarantine then you know how mind-numbingly boring it can be, and if you haven’t, then you’ve heard the horror stories for sure.

I recently had to bite the bullet and spend 2 whole weeks on my own, and let me tell you it was hard not to sleep the days away in the hopes that they would pass faster.

Unfortunately, sleeping through the day will only work for so long, so for the times when you can’t sleep here are some things you can do to pass time while locked inside.

Gaming

1

Play games

Now by games it can be anything, play a game of solitaire or maybe a video game. That’s what I did.

For a bit of context, I had never played a single computer game before quarantine  but once I had nothing better to do they proved themselves to be my saving grace.

Playing games is a great way to escape reality for hours at a time and take your mind off the time. I personally recommend games like ‘Hades’ and ‘Spiritfarer’, but honestly a good dungeon crawler is always a safe way to go for me.

2

Write a journal

Some days can be harder than others and your emotions can start to get the best of you. On days like this, find a notebook or some pieces of paper and write letters. You can write to anyone you want, a family member, a friend, a significant other, or even yourself in the future.

It was my experience that writing these letters helped me control my emotions and feel connected to the person I was writing to again.

And then for a few bonus points, if you feel like it you can give the person all the letters you wrote them at the end of 14 days.

Learn new Recipes

You’re going to be home a lot, and you can only eat so much takeout, so there is no better time to learn new recipes than when you have nothing better to do.

Take the opportunity to try new foods or pick a new diet. I would recommend going through some of the wonderful ideas the other Toppin' Up creators  have posted in the past - I can personally confirm that they are all delicious!

4

Read a book

If you have followed my work, this entry should not surprise you. I am a huge advocate for reading and after 14 days with no company I am now more sure than ever that if you have the right book, time just flies by. So find a good book!

Any genre will do but make sure it’s something you love and that you find it immersive! I recommend fantasy books for this, something like “Empire of the Vampire” by Jay Kristoff or “Half a King” by Joe Abbercromby.

Alternatively, if you’re interested in reading books by local authors, I suggest picking up a copy of “Out of the Shadows” by Jessica DeBattista.

Video call your friends and family

Call people! Keep up-to-date with all the gossip going on in the outside world! Whatever you do just stay connected, it is the only way to protect your sanity for the duration of your stay in isolation.

If it wasn’t for my friends and family calling me everyday I might have lost my mind.

These are my tips and tricks for surviving quarantine. I can only hope that you never need to use these tips but if you do, good luck and hang in there!
