First six Maltese villages identified as car-free zones

Malta traffic

Zejtun, Dingli, Qrendi, Zurrieq, Mqabba and Safi are the first six Maltese villages to have been identified in a new plan to pedestrianise squares and roads across the country.

The ambitious project is being led by the Local Councils Association, though no timeline has been confirmed yet. They say they were inspired by the pandemic and the near-empty streets in some of these localities.

The next steps to take would be for residents to be consulted on the projects and the needs of each area to be identified.

Speed limits on the roads leading to these areas would need to be reduced, and the proper road markings added.

This project has the massive potential of reducing traffic and pollution - but do you see it happening?

What do you think of this approach?
