Ice cream isn’t just for summertime! Here are 5 locally-available ice-cream flavours to savour.
Ice cream, you scream, we all love ice cream!
It is a truth universally acknowledged that almost everyone who can eat ice cream, absolutely loves it. But why is this?

Did you know that there is a scientific reason why most of us love indulging in ice cream?
When consumed by humans, ice cream actually produces serotonin, which is the feel-good hormone that helps boost our mood! This was discovered by a group of neuroscientists at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, who scanned the brains of people eating vanilla ice cream. You can read more on this interesting study online.
So, in light of this news, we have dug deep and done some rigorous taste-tasting to bring you five locally-available ice cream flavours for you to enjoy.
Taste buds, are you ready?
1
The classic Vanilla
Okay, but why start with the most boring flavour? We would rather call it classic, and when created using natural ingredients like vanilla bean extract, it is divine.
It is the plain flavour that allows you to be as creative as can be in terms of the choice of toppings.
A warm cookie on top? Covered in rainbow sprinkles? Paired with a chocolate stick? Yes, yes and YES please.
2
Oreo Ice Cream
The first time I actually tasted this was in a milkshake, and it was love at first sip.
But even in ice cream format, loaded with Oreo cookie crumbs and chunks (the more chunks, the better – why not choose quality and quantity and have the best of both worlds?), this ice-cream flavour is guaranteed to be the best balance of creamy and chocolatey.
3
Chocolate chip Mint Ice Cream
Someone, somewhere, someday had the brilliant idea of stirring in fresh peppermint AND chocolate chips into the ice-cream churner.
Whoever that is, give them a prize! Honour them! The brightness of the green colour is as indulgent as the brightness of the flavour of mint, and it goes really well with the richness of the chocolate. I’m also a fan of this flavour because it draws the most loyal of customers.
Basically, once you start liking this flavour, you’ll keep ordering for the rest of your life.
4
Kannol Ice Cream
Cannoli are one of the best-loved desserts in Sicilian tradition, but locally, they are also the bomb! Who doesn’t love a tube-shaped, deep fried shell filled with fresh, sweet ricotta?
As if that format wasn’t enough to enjoy it, a local eatery went ahead and made an ice cream flavour out of this pastry.
So if you have a hankering for shell pieces, chocolate chips, pistachios, mascarpone cheese, ricotta, cinnamon, sugar, milk and cream, then you need to book a ticket to flavour town.
It’s also two desserts in one – what’s not to love about this?
5
Imqaret Ice Cream
Another two-in-one dessert, and I saved the best for last. Imqaret are special to me because they remind me of when I was young and used to go to Valletta with my parents every Saturday morning, and part of the weekly ritual would be to get a dozen of these perfect, soft, pillowy squares of goodness on our way into the capital city and savour them, bite after bite as we explored the streets and got our weekly shopping done.
Well, thankfully someone turned this childhood memory into an ice cream flavour, and boy is it good. The spices from the date paste that is typically inside the pastry is infused with the vanilla ice cream, and pieces of the crunchy pastry are mixed into it.
I’m telling you … you should absolutely get your hands on this.
What are your favourite ice cream flavours? And how many flavours have you tried this year so far?
