After a very busy August with festas all across the archipelago, September will definitely be considered as a quiet month in this regard.
We’re slowly approaching the end of the summer astronomical season, the daily lives start to slowly change and adapt to the winter months.
That said, we still have a couple of festas for you to visit this September in our last instalment in the series of Festa season posts.
Let's start!

Żurrieq, Malta
4 September
Often associated with the Wied iż-Żurrieq area, this locality in the Southern part of Malta is home to the St. Catherine festa.
The people of Żurrieq are referred to as Żrieraq in Maltese. The festa is celebrated on the 4 September along the 10.5km2 which makes up the town of Żurrieq.

Xlendi, Gozo
4 September
The seaside village of Xlendi in Gozo is a quaint, yet very frequented place by the locals and tourists alike especially during these summer months.
It boasts a number of attractions such as caves and valleys. Just like Żurrieq, the festa of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on the 4 September.
Xlendi is also the place where a number of amphoras now making part of The Phoenician Shipwreck Project were discovered, just a few kilometres out from the shores of Xlendi.

Senglea, Malta
8 September
Forms part of the Cottonera area and ⅓ of the Three Cities, Senglea or Isla, marks the festa calendar with one of the most popular festas across the Maltese Islands.
The Nativity of Our Lady, or as it is more commonly known as Marija Bambina, is on 8 September and also features in other places around Malta and Gozo such as Xagħra (Gozo), Mellieħa and also Naxxar.

Żabbar, Malta
11 September
Another big festa is celebrated in Żabbar on the 11 September and dedicated to The Our Lady of Graces.
The Żabbar area covers an area of around 5.3km2 and hosts some 15,600+ people referred to as Żabbarin.
The name Żabbar might be referring to a person who prunes trees, but other possibilities about its etymology have been established.

Victoria, Gozo
11 September
The capital city of Gozo has recently celebrated its main festa of Santa Marija as featured in our previous instalment.
However, during the month of September, Victoria is home to the same festa as that one in Żabbar, albeit on a much smaller scale.
The Our Lady of Graces is celebrated in an area of Victoria referred to as Kapuċċini.
