Iron Man is the first instalment within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) released in 2008.

Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr playing as Tony Stark/Iron Man, the film served as a great start to what is now the highest grossing franchise with a box office revenue of $22.93 billion.

The plot centres around the protagonist, Tony Stark, his work partner Obadiah Stane, played by Jeff Bridges and Virginia Potts played by Gwyneth Paltrow.

The film immediately explains Stark’s backstory, showing his father’s legacy with Stark Industries and their financial gain through selling weaponry.

CRITICISM

In 2008, Iron Man was extremely well received and achieved a box office revenue of $585.8 million. With a score of 7.9/10 on IMDB, the film created a new cinematic movement for the Marvel Franchise.

In total, the film was nominated for 79 awards, winning 22 of them such as the Best Science Fiction Movie and Best Science Fiction Actor for Robert Downey Jr. at the Scream Awards.

Although years have passed since the release of Iron Man it is still popular, possibly due to it being the first MCU release. New fans of Marvel, who want to catch up with the new releases, usually start by watching Iron Man.

Since its release, many fans claim that there are better Marvel movies nowadays, however, this film remains a fan favourite.

Personally, I would recommend watching Iron Man if you are interested in becoming a part of the MCU audience.

At times, the writing itself can be quite predictable due to it following the Hero’s Journey process and remaining at an almost superficial level.
